China is recognised worldwide for one of the most developed industrial cultures on the planet. Chinese specialists who consider working abroad typically do so not for the income alone — for them it is an opportunity to apply knowledge and experience in a new environment and expand their professional scope.

For Ukrainian employers, this translates into a different type of candidate: more qualified, more technically prepared, with higher expectations — and with correspondingly higher output.

Working with Chinese candidates: what to expect

Chinese work culture differs from other Asian source countries in a few important ways.

First, process and quality orientation. Chinese specialists are accustomed to clear standards and process documentation. They will follow the procedure precisely — and expect the same from the organisation.

Second, higher expectations around conditions. Chinese candidates evaluate positions based on competitive compensation and reasonable living arrangements. Below-market offers will not attract qualified people.

Third, language is a real barrier. Most Chinese workers speak neither Ukrainian nor English. A Mandarin-speaking translator or coordinator is needed, at least during the initial period.
